Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Isa said the incident occurred on Oct 21 at 10.45pm, while the victim was near a field after a roll call.
“The victim reportedly suffered cracks on his ribs and spine as a result of being stomped on by a senior at the university who is in his third year.
“The victim is currently being treated at the hospital,” he said in a statement.
A police report on the incident was only lodged on Nov 8.
Defence minister Khaled Nordin, who described the incident as inappropriate, said it damages the reputation of the university and higher education institutions. He said the ministry will provide the police with full cooperation in the investigation.
This is the second reported case of assault involving UPNM cadets in October.
Last Friday, Amirul Iskandar Norhanizan, 22, claimed trial to assaulting Salman Saiful Surash, 20, by placing a hot iron on his chest at the UPNM hostel on Oct 22.
The victim suffered second degree burns on his chest.
Amirul faces a maximum jail term of 10 years or a fine, and could also be whipped, if convicted.
A more prominent case involved the death of navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, who was killed at UPNM’s Jebat hostel on May 22, 2017.
In July, the Court of Appeal found six ex-UPNM students guilty of murdering Zulfarhan, overturning the High Court’s reduced charge for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
They were handed the death sentence by the appeals court.
