PETALING JAYA:
Perikatan Nasional MPs are prohibited from negotiating directly with the government over the draft memorandum of understanding on funding allocations for the opposition, says PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man.

The Kubang Kerian MP said all negotiations must be conducted through PN as a bloc, which rejected the proposed MoU on Sept 15.

PN cited concerns over several terms which it viewed as conflicting with the Federal Constitution, as well as affecting the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras.

“Any negotiations must go through the party, and the conditions must be disclosed because all MPs are bound by their party affiliation,” he told FMT.

“Any MP intending to negotiate should notify the party to avoid misunderstandings and any unwarranted assumptions.”

Yesterday, deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof said the government had opened the door to negotiations with individual opposition MPs for equal allocations, after talks with PN as a bloc fell through.

Fadillah said his job was to hold negotiations on the MoU, but he could not force any party to take part.

He also said Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was the only one who had given any feedback on the draft MoU.

Similarly, PN Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said any negotiations must be done through the coalition as their MPs were elected on the PN ticket.

The Alor Setar MP also accused the government of attempting to divide the opposition through private negotiations, similar to its approach with the six Bersatu MPs who shifted their support to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The six MPs are Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang) and Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar).

“Allocations are the rights of MPs. Kedah, Kelantan and Perlis allocate funds to the opposition without requiring negotiations,” Afnan said.
