PETALING JAYA:
The prosecution has sought to extend the prison sentence for celebrity preacher Syed Shah Iqmal Syed Shaiful, better known as Da’i Syed, who was sentenced to 10 years’ jail and three strokes of the cane for rape.

The appeal was filed today at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, Bernama reported.

Syed Shah’s lawyer, Amin Othman, told reporters this when met after a case management session before High Court senior assistant registrar Nadia Othman today.

“We (defence) are appealing against the conviction and sentence, while the prosecution is appealing against the (10-year) imprisonment.”

He said the court fixed Dec 10 for further case management.

Syed Shah has been temporarily released from prison after the High Court granted a stay of his 10-year jail sentence, pending the outcome of his appeal.

He was sentenced on Aug 30 after being found guilty of raping a 23-year-old woman at a condominium unit five years ago.

Syed Shah was discharged and acquitted last year when the sessions court held that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against him.

However, the High Court allowed the prosecution’s appeal and ordered Syed Shah to enter his defence.
