PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded a statement from Gunung Semanggol assemblyman Razman Zakaria over a Facebook post said to be offensive.

MCMC said the post, which was uploaded via Facebook account “Haji Razman Zakaria” yesterday, touched on sensitive and racially-charged issues, including on the waving of a foreign nation’s flags during the Guan Gong festival in Teluk Intan, Perak.

“MCMC’s enforcement officers also recorded statements from the administrator of the Facebook account and seized their mobile phones and SIM cards for further investigation,” the commission said in a statement.

The matter is being probed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which criminalises online content that is “obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person”.

The provision provides for a fine of not more than RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC also reminded the public to exercise caution before sharing content that could harm public harmony and peace, especially on 3R (race, religion, and royalty) issues.

“Strict action will be taken against those involved under existing legal provisions,” it added.

Earlier, it was reported that police had recorded statements from Razman, who is also Perak PAS commissioner, as well as four others in its probe into a rally held at Dataran Menara Condong in Perak last Saturday night.

Perak police chief Azizi Mat Aris said all five were summoned for questioning yesterday as the rally was held without prior notification.

He also said eight reports were received regarding the rally, which lasted over an hour and involved more than 300 participants.

Previously, the media reported that the rally served as a counter-demonstration after a video was shared online showing a group of people waving the flags of China near the Leaning Tower in Teluk Intan during a parade on Oct 24.

The Guan Gong temple chairman Soon Boon Hua later apologised, saying members of a delegation from China had unexpectedly waved their national flag.
