PETALING JAYA:
The Association of Private Hospitals Malaysia (APHM) has suggested that the government offer a RM15,000 sign-on bonus for nurses in both public and private hospitals under the 2025 budget.

APHM president Dr Kuljit Singh proposed that the bonus be distributed by the government over a three-year period, adding that such an initiative would help retain Malaysian nursing graduates to serve in local hospitals.

“This incentive must be designed to encourage dedication to the local healthcare service. Consequently, any funds granted must be reimbursed should an individual decide to exit Malaysia.

“Private hospitals in Malaysia are prepared to support the government in promoting nursing as an attractive career option for Malaysians, ultimately strengthening our healthcare system with local talent,” he said in a statement.

Kuljit also suggested that private hospitals be eligible for double tax deductions for any “cost associated with this sign-on incentive”.

Separately, he thanked the health ministry for extending the intake of foreign nurses for private hospitals to Sept 30, 2027.

“This initiative by the ministry represents a significant advancement in securing the sustainability of private healthcare services for Malaysian citizens, particularly considering the expanding medical tourism sector,” he said.
