Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa) praised the Selangor government for providing allocations to opposition members in the state assembly.
In reply, Amirudin (PH-Gombak) quipped that the political rivalry with the opposition in Selangor might not be as fierce as with their counterparts in the Dewan Rakyat.
He also said there were different political dynamics at the state and federal levels.
Marzuk then praised Amirudin’s leadership style and suggested he could mediate political tensions at the federal level, particularly over the dispute on the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the government and opposition.
“Thank you, PAS and Perikatan Nasional, for suggesting that we in Pakatan Harapan have a good prime minister candidate,” Amirudin replied.
“I don’t mind facilitating discussions if needed. I am more than willing to serve as a mediator (between the government and opposition) for the good of the country.”
Previously, PN rejected the government’s draft MoU, which sought to allocate funds to the opposition while maintaining stability.
PN had claimed the MoU went against the Federal Constitution with conditions that touched on the special position of the Malays and Bumiputeras.
However, earlier today, opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) said he was still open to holding talks on the MoU, particularly if Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim were to invite him for discussions.
Previously, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin (PN-Pagoh) said it was pointless to negotiate further with the government.
