PETALING JAYA:
An aide to finance minister Anwar Ibrahim has accused PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari of attempting to create false narratives on the government’s targeted RON95 petrol subsidy plan to confuse the people.

Kamil Munim maintained that the targeted subsidy plan was to put an end to 40% of the subsidised petrol being used by foreigners and those in the T15 category.

Kamil, who is also the PKR Youth deputy chief, said Fadhli should understand and thoroughly examine Putrajaya’s proposal before making “half-baked” statements.

“Anwar has given an assurance that 85% of the population will not be affected by this proposal. (Fadhli) did not mention this, but only highlighted the half-baked story that the government intends to withdraw subsidies,” he said, according to Bernama.

Following the tabling of the 2025 budget last Friday, Fadhli claimed that the government was going to “withdraw” the subsidy on RON95 petrol.

The Pasir Mas MP said he had already predicted that this would happen if Barisan Nasional were to win the Mahkota by-election, held last month.

Kamil reiterated that the government’s targeted subsidy plan aims to do away with blanket subsidies, which disproportionately benefit the wealthy as well as foreign nationals.

“The government emphasises that the savings will be used for the welfare of the general public, financing the development of educational, health, and public transport facilities in the country,” he said.

Tabling the budget, Anwar announced that the government plans to roll out targeted subsidies for RON95 by mid-2025.

Earlier today, economy minister Rafizi Ramli said the targeted subsidy will not be based on household income alone but will take other factors into consideration.

However, he did not go into details as to what these factors would be.
