Video on secret underage conversions taken down from TikTok, court hears

However, a lawyer says the recording by preacher Firdaus Wong remains on other social media sites.

Lawyer M Visvanathan said the video can still be viewed on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Lawyers for preacher Firdaus Wong, who was ordered to remove a video allegedly promoting secret underage conversions, confirmed today the video has been removed from TikTok.

Lawyers Norazali Nordin and Syahidah Hanum, representing the preacher, notified the Kuala Lumpur High Court in a hearing today the TikTok video was taken down a few days ago.

However, M Visvanathan, the lawyer for eight non-Muslim parents who obtained an interim court order this month compelling Firdaus to remove the video, said as of this morning, the video remains on Facebook, X, and Instagram.

Visvanathan said the order, granted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on an ex parte basis in Firdaus’s absence, was made to preserve the status quo between the parties in an ongoing lawsuit.

Justice Amarjeet Singh said the court has set Oct 24 for the next hearing for Firdaus to confirm whether the video has been taken down, adding that he still has one week left to file the affidavit.

At a press conference outside the courthouse, Global Human Rights Federation president S Shashi Kumar said covert conversions into Islam have been happening for many years. “This is why we, as NGOs and parents, have to take it (the issue involving the video) to court.”

In June, Firdaus posted a video of him allegedly giving a man instructions on how to handle requests from minors wishing to convert secretly to Islam.

In the same month, lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh said the video also contained advice on how children can hide their conversion from their parents and pray in secret.

Numerous police reports were lodged against Firdaus after the video made its rounds on social media, leading police to open an investigation paper under Section 505(c) of the Penal Code for statements conducive to public mischief.
