There was a 35.5% hike in online crime cases reported to the police last year, with all types of offences recording an increase.

The statistics department said there were 34,532 reported online crime cases in 2023 compared with 25,479 in 2022.

In a statement, it said e-commerce crime was the highest contributor to online crime last year at 33.2%, followed by telecommunications crime (30%), non-existent investments (15.6%), non-existent loans (12.3%), e-finance (6.1%) and love scams (2.7%).

The police also saw a 32.1% increase in the number of commercial crime cases in 2023, after 40,350 cases were recorded compared with 30,536 in 2022.

The crime index, which includes assault and property crimes, increased 3.2% to 52,444 cases compared with 50,813 in 2022. Assault and property crimes recorded a 1% and 3.8% increase to 10,453 cases and 41,991 cases, respectively.

Fraud made up the majority of the cases reported to the police in 2023 with 36,936 cases, followed by criminal breach of trust (1,217 cases) and offences under the Moneylenders Act 1951 (994).

The crime index ratio increased to 149 per 100,000 of the population in 2023 from 146 in 2022.

Kuala Lumpur (221), Selangor (196), Kedah (193), Penang (193) and Negeri Sembilan (159) all had crime index ratios that exceeded the national average.

Sabah recorded the lowest crime index ratio at 95, followed by Kelantan (96) and Terengganu (100).

The number of sexual crime cases involving children reported to the police in 2023 increased by 26.5% to 1,567 last year, from 1,239 in 2022. Child pornography offences recorded the highest rise at 139.3%, followed by child grooming (100%) and non-physical sexual assault on a child (97.8%).

The number of traffic summonses issued by the police dropped 12.3% to 4.6 million compared with 5.3 million in 2022.

The department also noted that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recorded a 25.1% increase in investigation papers opened in 2023 (1,026) compared with 820 cases previously.

The number of arrests made by MACC also increased by 25.1% to 1,137 from 909 in 2022.

The department said the statistics are based on administrative records obtained from various agencies.
