KUALA LUMPUR:
A coalition of animal rights groups will file a civil suit against the Besut district council for shooting dead a stray dog known as Kopi early this month.

Animal rights lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said the groups want the officers involved in the shooting on Oct 6 to be charged, and will file the suit in the Terengganu High Court next week.

“We want all officers involved to be charged under the Animal Welfare Act 2015. We demand that police take action against them. We will not accept our police report being marked as no further action.

“Stop murdering our stray dogs,” he said.

Earlier, several groups came to the Sentul police station to file a report, joined by around 100 people who gathered in solidarity with Kopi.

Meanwhile, Selangor Furry Future Association president S Shashi Kumar said the veterinary services department (DVS) must be held responsible.

“We will submit a memorandum to DVS this Friday. They must also be held responsible. This cruelty must stop,” he said.

Veteran social activist, Lee Lam Thye, said justice for animals must not be compromised and urged authorities to emphasise on animal welfare, adding that there was no solid justification for the killing of Kopi.

Another animal welfare advocate, Sunny Ung, advised the government officers in charge of handling stray dogs to know their boundaries instead of merely putting dogs down.

Kopi reportedly went viral on social media in March for playing with a stray cat.

Animal-lover Instagram account My Forever Doggo reported that Kopi was shot dead during a stray culling operation on Oct 6.
