In a statement released today, UiTM said the initiative follows a request by the suspect’s family, who wishes to extend a personal apology in a face-to-face meeting with the families of the three victims, Bernama reported.
However, UiTM said it will wait for an appropriate time to ensure all parties are calm and emotionally ready for the meeting.
“UiTM appreciates the intention and will try to connect with the victims’ families so that the meeting can take place at a suitable time for all three families.
“For now, they need space to cope with the immense grief of losing their children,” the statement read.
It was reported that the husband of the female driver, who is believed to be suffering from mental health issues, had expressed desire to meet the victims’ families to apologise on behalf of his wife and hoped UiTM could facilitate the meeting.
In the same statement, UiTM also provided an update on another victim of the accident, Ammar Danish Ridhuan, 20, saying that his condition was reportedly improving.
He is being cared for by his parents, who are taking turns attending to him.
It said the victim’s family had also expressed satisfaction with the accommodation and other support provided by UiTM.
Danish suffered injuries to his waist and is receiving treatment at Dungun Hospital.
Terengganu deputy police chief Wan Rukman Wan Hassan had earlier said the accident occurred in front of the university at about 7.35pm on Wednesday when a car driven by a woman collided with two motorcycles carrying the four students.
Wan Rukman said the students were returning to campus after dinner.
Police said their preliminary investigation showed that the suspect may be mentally unstable.
The driver, a housewife and mother of three, was remanded for four days to assist in the investigation.
