KUALA LUMPUR:
Rural and regional development minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged subsidiaries under his ministry to reduce their reliance on government funding by strengthening their efforts to generate profits and become self-reliant.

Citing Felcra’s success in generating RM129 million in distributable profits, Zahid stressed that each agency should seek to generate their own revenue through sectors such as bioeconomy, renewable energy, and business-oriented education.

Zahid, who is also a deputy prime minister, recommended that Majlis Amanah Rakyat enhance its business-oriented education and training programmes.

“I also suggest that the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority introduce premium agricultural products for the international market,” he said at the ministry’s monthly assembly today.

In August, Zahid said several unprofitable subsidiaries of agencies under his ministry might be shut down or merged with other companies.

He said the suggestion was among the “drastic measures” that had been proposed to the finance ministry.

Zahid also called for the Komuniti Desa Dashboard’s use to be expedited to provide access to information on agriculture, education, entrepreneurship training, and aid distribution.

He called for continued collaboration with tech firms, particularly through the proposed digital literacy boot camp under the community development department.

“This programme can prepare rural youth for future employment, reduce the digital gap, and foster entrepreneurial values,” he said.

Zahid also highlighted the benefits of e-commerce partnerships, which have boosted incomes.

He said a prime example is Nur Rafidah Man, also known as “Jungle Girl”, who earned RM1 million in just one week from selling health oils.
