Court rejects Guan Eng’s bid to cite Machang MP for contempt

Lawyers for the former Penang chief minister had sought to cite Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal over a ‘mocking’ post on X.

Lawyers for Lim Guan Eng took offence to a post by Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal over the former Penang chief minister’s undersea tunnel corruption trial.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The sessions court today rejected an attempt by Lim Guan Eng’s lawyers to cite an opposition MP for contempt over comments made on social media regarding his ongoing undersea tunnel corruption trial.

Trial judge Azura Alwi said she took note of Lim’s complaint but was not inclined to initiate contempt proceedings against Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal.

“I don’t know what the prosecution would want to do,” said Azura.

Earlier, lawyer RSN Rayer told the court that Wan Fayhsal had posted the message on X last week, saying it was intended to mock Lim over the ongoing case.

“Such comments should not be made.

“He (Wan Fayhsal) was not in court (last week) and made his conclusions based on media reports,” Rayer said.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin told the court that no one should be commenting on the trial.

Lim is standing trial on charges of using his position as then Penang chief minister to ask businessman Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli for a 10% cut of the profits from the undersea tunnel project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks from him.

He is also accused of two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land from two companies.

The hearing continues.
