Judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin handed down the sentence on Lee Soon Heng, 45, who pleaded guilty. The sentence is to be served starting from the date of Lee’s arrest on Sept 23.
Lee was charged with ramming the stolen car into the two policemen, aged 36 and 28 respectively, at a traffic light in Jalan Segambut here at 12.50pm, on Sept 23.
He was charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a fine upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the two policemen had attempted to arrest Lee before he rammed into them.
Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nidzuwan Abd Latip asked for an appropriate punishment considering the seriousness of the offence and theft of the car.
“The accused is also serving a one-year prison sentence for driving a stolen car. Therefore, a commensurate sentence should be given to the accused,” he said.
Lawyer Simret Singh of the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented Lee, requested a minimum prison sentence on the grounds that his client had repented and came from a poor family.
“My client apologised to the court for the offence he committed. He also has a lover and an eight-year-old child and is still unmarried.
“Therefore, please consider the minimum prison sentence for my client,” said the lawyer.
