KUALA LUMPUR:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the government will introduce a national cloud policy which will focus on four core areas.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the policy is “forthcoming”, but did not provide a timeframe.

He said the first core area involves the government boosting public service innovation and efficiency.

“By leveraging cloud technology, we aim to modernise government operations, foster citizen engagement, and streamline the delivery of public services,” he said at Google’s ‘Mantap Malaysia Bersama AI’ event at a hotel here today.

Anwar said the third core area involves strengthening user trust and data security.

“The government will establish robust security frameworks and protocols to protect sensitive data and critical infrastructure in both public and private cloud environments,” he said.

He said the final core area involves empowering citizens through digital inclusivity

“Our approach will be citizen-centric and inclusive, utilising cloud technology to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of digital-first public services.”

He also said the government is establishing a national artificial intelligence (AI) office to coordinate initiatives in the competitive global AI landscape and aims to complete an AI action plan within a year.

Anwar launched the groundbreaking ceremony for Google’s US$2 billion data centre and cloud region, which will be built at the Elmina Business Park in Selangor.

Ruth Porat, the president and chief investment officer of Google and its parent company Alphabet, said Malaysia will join an exclusive group of 11 nations where Google sets up operations once the data centre is completed.

Also present at the event were investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz, digital minister Gobind Singh Deo, transport minister Loke Siew Fook, and deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching.

Supporting environmental sustainability, skills development

Lim Sue Ann, Google’s head of government affairs and public policy for the Southeast Asia cluster, also announced the firm’s collaboration with the Global Environmental Centre and Petaling Jaya City Council to restore the Taman Aman Lake in Selangor.

This effort is in line with Google’s commitment to water stewardship and keeping watersheds healthy in communities where it operates its data centres.

She also announced Google’s collaboration with Unicef Malaysia, CelcomDigi Bhd, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, and Arus Academy to bring the Future Skills for All programme to Selangor.

The programme will train 260 teachers who will subsequently coach up to 61,000 students in the state.
