KLUANG:
Perikatan Nasional election director Azmin Ali said the opposition had not resorted to personal attacks when it raised a now-debunked claim about Barisan Nasional’s candidate for the Mahkota by-election.

Azmin said PN was merely highlighting a matter that had been brought to its attention.

“Chegubard’s claim was based on a police report we received and we only wanted it to be clarified,” Azmin said, referring to Bersatu’s Badrul Hisham Shaharin.

“We were not attacking him (BN candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah) personally. We didn’t make any allegations, nor did we pass judgment. We were merely highlighting a matter that was based on a police report,” he said at a ceramah here last night.

Yesterday, Badrul revealed that he had obtained police documents allegedly implicating Syed Hussien in a fight which had caused injuries, and urged Syed Hussien to clarify the matter.

Syed Hussien later denied the claim and said he was considering legal action against Badrul.

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Syed Hussien had defended a blind person from being harassed by a group of people in a 2008 assault case but no charges were filed against him.

Kluang police chief Bahrin Noh also confirmed that Syed Hussien did not have a criminal record.

The Mahkota by-election tomorrow will see a straight fight between Syed Hussien and PN’s Haizan Jaafar for the Johor state assembly seat.
