Azleen said potential candidates had been thoroughly vetted before the coalition picked Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, the Kluang Umno Youth chief, as BN’s candidate for the by-election.

“I have nothing to worry about. We cross-checked with multiple agencies and if there were any red flags, the potential candidates would not have been nominated,” he told FMT.

Azleen was responding to a claim by Bersatu’s Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegubard, that he had obtained police documents allegedly implicating Syed Hussien in a fight which had caused injuries.

Badrul called on Syed Hussien to clarify if he was the individual in question.

Azleen said Syed Hussien was not the only candidate. “We had a pool (of candidates to choose from). If Syed Hussien had a red flag, we would have selected others.”

He also said the voters in Mahkota should not worry about Syed Hussien’s abilities and capabilities to serve as an effective assemblyman.

Syed Hussien is involved in a straight fight with Perikatan Nasional’s Haizan Jaafar of Bersatu in the by-election on Saturday.

The Mahkota seat fell vacant following the death of Umno assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.

Meanwhile, Syed Hussien said he was considering legal action against Badrul over his allegation, which he denied.

He also said he would lodge a police report against Badrul over the claim and also for displaying his MyKad to the public.

“I am discussing the matter with my lawyers,” he said.
