Vigneswaran said Mahkota’s Indian community has long backed BN at the polls because they were confident in the coalition’s ability to serve them and look after their welfare.
“That is why I’m confident the BN candidate will garner solid support from the Indian community come polling day.
“I can say that about 75% to 80% of the Indian votes in Mahkota will go to BN,” he said during a campaign event with the Indian community in Mahkota last night.
The event was attended by BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Johor Umno chief and menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi and Syed Hussien.
There are 66,318 voters in Mahkota, of whom about 56% are Malay, followed by Chinese (34%), Indians (8%) and others (2%).
Syed Hussien is in a straight fight against Perikatan Nasional’s Haizan Jaafar in the by-election, which was called following the death of Umno assemblyman Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.
In the 2022 state election, Sharifah won the seat with a 5,166-vote majority, defeating candidates from Pakatan Harapan, PN and Warisan.
