Anwar said he would approve the tabling of the motion.

“There are some people demanding I step down (as prime minister). Do you think our country has no laws? If you want me to step down, table a no confidence motion,” he said in his speech at a PKR gathering at Stadium Axiata, Bukit Jalil, here tonight.

This is not the first time Anwar has challenged Perikatan Nasional to table such a motion.

Anwar had issued a similar challenge in May last year. In July last year, he said he would have no qualms if the opposition wanted to table a confidence motion against him, adding that he would even shorten the notice period.

He repeated his challenge on Jan 11 this year.

Anwar previously faced a confidence motion in December 2022, a month after the 15th general election which resulted in a hung Parliament. He formed a unity government after putting together a coalition of Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and minor parties.

The motion of confidence was tabled by deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof. It was passed by a voice vote; the opposition did not call for a bloc vote.
