PETALING JAYA:
Singapore has banned two Malaysian-made food products described as weight loss aid after detecting prohibited substances in them.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said the “Good Morning Candies” and “Good Night Candies”, manufactured by Unique World Beauty, contained substances prohibited in food items.

“These products contain one or more of the following substances: frusemide, phenolphthalein, sennosides, and sibutramine,” SFA said in a Facebook post.

Frusemide is a diuretic, and sennosides are natural laxatives.

Phenolphthalein is a chemical that has been banned in many countries over fears it may be carcinogenic.

Sibutramine, a scheduled poison that acts as an appetite suppressant, is also prohibited in many countries on grounds that its use increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

SFA said it has worked with e-commerce firms to remove the products from their platforms, while sellers have been ordered to halt sales immediately.

“Under Section 15 of Singapore’s Sale of Food Act, the sale of unsafe food is not permitted. Any person who contravenes any of the provisions of this Act shall be liable upon conviction to a fine not exceeding S$5,000.

“In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, they shall be liable to a fine not exceeding S$10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months, or both,” it said.
