KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia has achieved 43% of all 248 indicators of the latest sustainable development goals (SDGs), far above the world average of 17%, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar said this was a sign that Malaysia had successfully faced its challenges in implementing reforms, but it did not guarantee the nation’s success.

“When we discuss reforms, I would say we don’t (use) measurements like that. This achievement is only a small indication.

“We should do whatever is necessary to ensure we achieve these goals most spectacularly, because that is what Madani is all about,” he said in his keynote speech while officiating the SDG Summit 2024 here today.

Anwar said the Madani government is deeply committed to addressing issues of humanity and compassion, going beyond the current major pillars of the SDGs, which emphasised crucial economic, social and environmental imperatives.

“I’m appalled by the fact that we still have leaders who do not believe in the impact of climate change. We still have this problem despite our level of sophistication, knowledge and understanding,” he said.

Anwar said this shows there are areas and avenues for the nation to always improve.

“Economy, development and sustainability are meaningless if there is no understanding beyond what is compassion and humanity,” he said.
