SHAH ALAM:
Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says the government’s education policies need to be reviewed, citing the absence of major examinations for Year 6 and Form 3 students.

Zahid said the scrapped UPSR and PT3 examinations had served as benchmarks to gauge the education levels of students before they sit for the SPM examination and choose their fields in furthering their studies.

He said he has held discussions with the education and higher education ministries previously regarding the case of 10,177 students not sitting for their SPM last year.

“It’s a must that our education policy, which currently does not have major examinations for Year 6 and Form 3 students, be revamped,” he said at MIC’s 78th general assembly at the Ideal Convention Centre here today.

In April 2021, the education ministry announced the abolition of UPSR and the cancellation of the PT3 examination for that year. The PT3 examination was abolished in June 2022.

In March last year, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry did not plan to bring back the previous system of assessing students through examinations.

Meanwhile, Zahid, the Barisan Nasional chairman, said education policies should not change with changes in government administrations, adding that this would only victimise students.

“We should not be experimenting on students, making them the victims. Every government policy (on education) must be done in a (consistent way) so that our children aren’t victimised,” he said.
