PETALING JAYA:
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh has urged the National Sports Council (MSN) and Paralympic Council of Malaysia (MPM) to settle their “cold war” in a professional manner to ensure harmony between the two organisations.

Yeoh said harmony between the two sports bodies was crucial to ensure the development of athletes, Bernama reported.

She added that MPM president Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin’s recent claim of MSN’s interference in the management of the national contingent for the Paris 2024 Paralympics was a non-issue.

Megat had claimed that MSN’s interference contributed to the contingent’s failure of meeting its target of four gold medals at the Paris Games.

“In reality, there is no issue. The situation arose when two athletes who were supposed to win gold ended up with silver. I believe the athletes themselves wanted the gold (medal), but it didn’t happen.

“If there is any misunderstanding, they need to sit down and resolve it together. I was there (in Paris) but Megat did not raise the issue. So, I don’t think it’s appropriate (to raise it now).

“The athletes should not pay the price for any misunderstanding. We have had a meeting with (Paris Paralympics chef de mission) R Subramaniam, who is also on the MSN board, and I believe that’s the right way (to resolve the matter), not through the media,” she was quoted as saying.

Previously, Megat proposed that only one entity should lead the national contingent at sports events. He also reportedly claimed that MSN “bullied” the Paris Paralympics chef de mission.

MSN director-general Abdul Rashid Yaakub then slammed Megat for his remarks and rubbished the claim that the chef de mission was “bullied”, which he said Subramaniam had also denied.

According to Rashid, the target of four gold medals in the Paralympics was set by MPM, not MSN.
