Jailani said this was because the matter had been explained by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan during a press conference in Parliament on July 16.
“No show-cause letter or anything of the sort is necessary.
“My reason for leaving Umno is simple – it’s because party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Melaka Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh had failed to keep the promises made in the previous state election,” Berita Harian quoted him as saying.
Last Thursday, Rauf, who is also Melaka chief minister, said Jailani needed to present detailed information regarding his PAS membership before any decision could be made about his status.
Rauf had said if Jailani could not provide evidence that he had been a PAS member since 2023, it would seem that he was just “making the claim without substance”.
Rauf said his party had also sent a letter to PAS asking it to confirm if Jailani was indeed their member.
On July 19, Rauf said Jailani’s status as Rembia assemblyman would be determined by Melaka assembly speaker Ibrahim Durum.
He said the speaker would review the matter in accordance with state laws and enactments.
When asked, Jailani today refused to say whether he had sent an official letter to Ibrahim to clarify his PAS membership.
“This is my response to Rauf’s remarks. Whether or not I have sent the speaker a letter, I will let you (the media) know when the time comes,” he added.
On July 16, Takiyuddin confirmed that Jailani, who had been suspended from Umno, joined PAS on June 10, 2023.
He claimed that this did not constitute party hopping, because the Melaka Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2023 on party hopping was passed on July 31, 2023, after Jailani joined PAS.
A letter from the Umno disciplinary board dated Aug 28 last year, accused Jailani of sabotaging the party by attending the announcement of the Perikatan Nasional candidate for the Simpang Jeram by-election in Bakri, Johor.
