PETALING JAYA:
National men’s doubles shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani kept the Malaysian flag flying at the 2024 Japan Open when they stormed into the final by defeating the new Indonesian pair of Leo Rolly-Bagas Maulana.

The 42-minute semi-final at Yokohama Arena today saw the world No 12 win quite easily in straight games 21-19, 21-17.

The Malaysians, who are in sight of their biggest title to date, will take on world No 3 South Koreans Kang Min Hyuk-Seo Seung Jae in the final tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Badminton Association of Malaysia also confirmed today that Sze Fei and Izzuddin will leave BAM.

BAM said it respects their decision to turn professional and has agreed to release them officially on Sept 1.

Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin defeated Min Hyuk-Seung Jae at their last meeting at the Badminton Asia Championship in April. However, they lost to them in their two encounters last year.

Tomorrow’s final will be a huge opportunity for Sze Fei-Izzuddin to bag their largest prize money as it is the first time that they are playing in a Badminton World Tour Super 750 Series final.

If they win, the Malaysians will take home US$62,900 (RM275,226), with the losers earning RM130,174.

They have so far won four titles at the Badminton World Tour Super 100 and 300 Series – the German Open (2022) and the US Open, Kaohsiung Masters and Abu Dhabi Masters (all in 2023).
