“For now, we will follow the investigative process and the attorney-general’s (decision to prosecute Muhyiddin or not). I will not interfere (in the matter),” he told reporters at the launch of the Ihsan Madani Portal here.
Muhyiddin is being probed for allegedly disparaging the former king in a speech at a Nenggiri by-election ceramah. He had asked why he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah to become the prime minister after the 15th general election (GE15).
It led to 29 police reports being lodged against him and a rebuke by the Pahang crown prince, Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.
The former prime minister nonetheless defended his speech, saying it was not intended to insult the monarchy or incite the public, but it was based on facts.
On Wednesday, the Bersatu president submitted several documents to the police to assist in the probe, including what he said were the statutory declarations of 115 MPs backing him as prime minister after GE15.
Anwar says will ensure no media restrictions
Separately, Anwar said he would speak to the police to ensure no restrictions were imposed on the media, after Malaysiakini journalists were barred from covering a recent police event.
“I will contact the police immediately to ensure there are no restrictions on the media,” he said.
Despite being invited, the Malaysiakini reporters were not allowed to cover the event yesterday, which was supposed to be attended by Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.
Three Malaysiakini journalists are being investigated over an article about an alleged reshuffle in Bukit Aman, which Razarudin has already denied.
The article quoted a police source as saying deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay and Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director Shuhaily Zain would be transferred to head other agencies.
