The DRT service has been in a proof-of-concept stage in Air Itam since Aug 1, with two minibuses offering RM1 rides to improve the “first-last mile” experience for commuters.
Rapid Bus CEO Yazurin Salij Yasin said the response to the Air Itam pilot DRT line had been positive, paving the way for the expansion of the service. He said at least 120 people were using the service in Air Itam daily.
Additionally, he said, about 5,000 people in Air Itam used the regular Rapid Penang bus service daily.
“Air Itam was specifically chosen as the site for the DRT pilot project because of its strategic connection with Rapid Penang bus routes 201 and 202 (which serve the greater George Town and Green Lane areas).
“By improving connections between residential areas and these key bus routes, the DRT system aims to address gaps in the current public transport network.
“This includes targeting underserved regions, or white areas,” he said.
Yazurin said the DRT system would support existing services and offer a flexible solution to reach areas currently lacking adequate coverage by Rapid Penang buses.
The minibuses are expected to arrive in batches from December to June next year. They will be able to cater to disabled passengers too, Rapid Bus said.
The DRT minibuses cost RM1 per trip, and accept My50 and OKU Smile passes.
