Judge Norina Zainul Abidin meted out the sentence to 22-year-old Nur Iman Shafie Sulin, who was charged with rashly endangering the lives or personal safety of others by wielding an offensive weapon at a football pitch in Desa Melawati at 12.45am on Aug 4.
The charge was framed under Section 336 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum of three months’ imprisonment or a fine of up to RM500, or both, upon conviction.
Nur Iman’s lawyer Syawal Razak sought a fair sentence for his client as he had no fixed employment and only helped his parents sell nasi lemak.
“He is single but needs to care for both his parents, who have health issues. He has also shown remorse for his actions and promised not to repeat the offence,” Syawal told the court, according to Sinar Harian.
A video of the accused wielding the kerambit at a football match following a disagreement at the KLFA Football Centre had gone viral. Police subsequently identified him based on recordings of witness conversations and closed-circuit camera footage.
In the same proceedings, Nur Iman pleaded not guilty to a charge of committing mischief by fire at an entertainment centre.
He was jointly charged, with four others, with throwing four petrol bombs at the entertainment centre located on Jalan Yap Kwan Seng at 2.17am on May 9.
The charge was framed under Section 435 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same act. If found guilty, each of them could be punished with up to 14 years imprisonment and a fine.
The judge allowed each of the accused bail at RM12,000 with one surety and fixed Sept 25 for case re-mention.
