PUTRAJAYA:
The Court of Appeal has postponed by three weeks its decision on whether to allow former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s application to reinstate his acquittal in the Jana Wibawa case.

The court will now deliver its decision on Sept 11, instead of Aug 20.

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin confirmed that they were informed of the new date via a letter today, Bernama reported.

The case arises from charges brought against Muhyiddin last year, which were linked to the government’s Jana Wibawa programme. He had pleaded not guilty to charges of abusing his power as prime minister by seeking to obtain RM232.5 million in bribes for his party, Bersatu.

An application to the High Court to review the charges resulted in a decision on Aug 15 last year that the charges were defective. The court ordered that he be acquitted and discharged.

However, the prosecution challenged the ruling at the Court of Appeal, which ruled on Feb 28 this year that the High Court had erred by holding the charges to be defective.

The appeals court ordered that the case be returned to the sessions court for trial.

Muhyiddin then filed an application for a full five-member bench of the Court of Appeal to review the February decision and restore the High Court acquittal decision.

If Muhyiddin’s application is dismissed, he will have to return to the sessions court to be tried on the four charges. If the review application is allowed, he will be acquitted.
