3 cops claim trial for exhibiting firearms during robbery

The trio and another individual are alleged to have carried guns when robbing a UNHCR cardholder.

PETALING JAYA:
Three policemen were charged in the Bandar Baru Bangi sessions court today with exhibiting firearms during a robbery last month, with two of them facing a separate charge of firing a weapon.

Iqmal Haiqal Gazali, 32, Syafik Izwan Asri Toupik, 35, and Najmi Hakim Mansor, 24, were jointly charged under Section 4 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.

According to the charge sheet, another individual, Sukarnain Bernados, 32, was slapped with the same charge.

The four men and another person still at large allegedly robbed a UNHCR cardholder at a house in Kampung Sungai Pening, Semenyih, at 11pm on July 30, where they allegedly brandished P999 Walther guns.

If found guilty, they each face a jail term of between 30 and 40 years and at least six strokes of the rotan.

All the accused pleaded not guilty before judge Shahrul Rizal Majid.

No bail was offered to the four men. The court set Sept 23 for case management.

At the Bandar Baru Bangi magistrates’ court, Iqmal and Syafik were each charged under Section 3 of the same statute with discharging a firearm in the course of the robbery with the intention of killing or injuring a man.

Sukarnain was charged under Section 3A with being their accomplice.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged offence took place at 1.50am on July 31 near a pond in Semenyih.

If found guilty, they face a jail term of between 30 and 40 years and at least 12 strokes of the rotan.

No plea was recorded from the trio as the case will be tried before the High Court.

Magistrate Nurdiyanah Nawawi also fixed Sept 23 for case management.

Iqmal and Syafik were represented by lawyer S Vinesh, while lawyers Jamal Abbas and Hermes Media Putra Ibrahim appeared for Sukarnian and Najmi, respectively.

Vinesh said the deputy public prosecutor informed him that both sets of charges will be tried in the High Court.
