The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said this demand was made when communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chairman Salim Fateh Din met with Meta representatives today.
“The PMO has demanded several things, including a detailed explanation on the actions taken by Meta and an open apology from Meta,” it said in a statement.
The posts removed by Meta included one where Anwar paid tribute to Haniyeh after he was killed in Tehran, Iran, on July 31.
The prime minister had described Haniyeh as a “dear friend and a valiant advocate for his people”.
The PMO contended that Meta’s actions were a form of discrimination, restricted freedom of speech and insulted the struggle of Palestinians for basic human rights.
“The unilateral decision to filter content without any consideration of the context of postings clearly raises questions as to the transparency of Meta’s policy on filtering content,” it said.
It added that it regretted Facebook’s restriction of Berita RTM’s live broadcast yesterday of the Free Palestine Gathering at Bukit Jalil, which was organised by Putrajaya.
The PMO also said Meta was expected to issue a statement soon.
Meta also owns the WhatsApp and Messenger social media apps.
