PETALING JAYA:
The driver and the company owner of a trailer in a fatal crash yesterday are expected to face charges, according to transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Loke said he would instruct the road transport department (JPJ) to take prosecutorial action against the company owner.

“The owner of the company’s licence needs to be accountable,” he told reporters in Seremban, alleging they were negligent and allowed the accident to happen, Bernama reported.

The trailer rammed into a house in Kampung Ketapang Hilir, at Km 5 of the Pekan-Rompin road in Pahang, killing two siblings.

Loke said enforcement officials had given repeated reminders to the transport company owner to be responsible and ensure that their drivers were free from the influence of drugs and other harmful activities.

“My condolences to the victims’ family.”

He added that the company owner would face prosecution, and if found guilty, their licence would be revoked.

Loke said he had instructed enforcement officials to conduct continuous joint operations and patrols, especially involving heavy vehicles, at all times.

“We’ve taken action to suspend and revoke licences so many times, but unfortunately this sort of thing still happens, as if they’re challenging the validity of the country’s laws,” he said.

The trailer driver, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, has been remanded for four days.
