PUTRAJAYA:
The government is reviewing the Tourism Industry Act 1992 to ensure it meets the needs of the current tourism market, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said discussions on the revision are under way.

“We are adapting it to the current market conditions, aiming for it to be relevant for at least the next 20 years before further modifications are needed,” he told a press conference at the tourism, arts and culture ministry here today.

Earlier, he chaired an engagement session with tourism players on the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.

On July 10, deputy tourism, arts and culture minister Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said the law will be strengthened to ensure better enforcement in efforts to curb travel package scams, including umrah packages.

He said improvements to the Act are necessary, as it has not been updated for a long time.

Zahid also said the government is targeting 35 million tourist arrivals in 2026.

He said the government will also take a closer look at market segmentation in efforts to attract more tourists.

“We are looking at existing markets and new markets. It needs to start now so that programmes can be implemented next year and by 2026, we will be ready to receive tourists based on the target market groups,” he said.

Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, said international tourist arrivals in Malaysia have increased significantly this year, with 9.48 million visitors as of May compared to 7.48 million tourists in the same period last year.

He said the tourism, arts and culture ministry has targeted 27.3 million international tourists and an income of RM102.7 billion this year.
