Lawyer in the dark over Papagomo’s arrest after attending sedition trial

Rafique Rashid Ali says Bukit Aman D5 officers detained the blogger immediately after his hearing at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court.

Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali said he is unsure why his client, Wan Azri Wan Deris, widely known as Papagomo, was arrested by Bukit Aman today.
PETALING JAYA:
Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali was left in the dark about the arrest of his client, blogger Wan Azri Wan Deris, immediately after his trial at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court today.

Rafique said Wan Azri, whose alter ego is believed to be Papagomo, was detained by officers from Bukit Aman’s classified criminal investigation unit (D5).

“They informed Wan Azri in front of us (his lawyers) that he was being arrested because of another police report concerning a separate sedition allegation,” he told FMT.

“We are unaware of the specific nature of the allegation mentioned in the police report.”

However, Rafique said, details of the latest sedition allegation are expected to be revealed when Wan Azri is presented before the Dang Wangi magistrates’ court tomorrow.

Earlier today, Wan Azri attended the second day of his sedition trial concerning an alleged Facebook post claiming that the government was pro-Israel and pro-Western.

On Jan 8, he pleaded not guilty to making seditious remarks on the Facebook page of Halid Hamidi (“Halid Mat Kool”).

These remarks were observed by an individual at a condominium on Jalan Tong Shin, Bukit Bintang, at 1pm on Nov 8 last year.

The charge is framed under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, punishable with a fine of up to RM5,000, a maximum of three years in prison, or both, upon conviction.
