Petaling Jaya police chief Shahrulnizam Ja’afar said a Facebook post captioned “My kids will never respect the police”, which has gone viral, showed a 13-second video and two pictures of the man getting into an argument with another driver.
He said the incident happened at about 8.30am last Monday, when the man was dropping off his wife at her workplace and was confronted by another motorist.
“A preliminary investigation found that the man wearing the t-shirt is not a police officer.
“He obtained the t-shirt when he joined in a fun ride event organised by the Shah Alam police. Police are looking for the suspect,” he said in a statement.
He said the investigation is being carried out under Section 48(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for illegal parking, which carries a punishment of a fine not less than RM1,000 and not more than RM5,000, or imprisonment for not less than a year, or both, if found guilty.
Shahrulnizam also cautioned the public against making unfounded allegations and slandering any party, particularly enforcement officers, without verification.
“Any person who deliberately makes such defamatory statements could be charged under Section 500 of the Penal Code (for criminal defamation) and, if found guilty, be punished with imprisonment for up to two years, or a fine, or both,” he said.
