NIBONG TEBAL:
Voting in the Sungai Bakap state by-election has concluded after all nine polling centres closed at 6pm.

The ballot boxes from the nine polling centres in eight districts – Padang Lalang, Puteri Gunong, Tasek Junjong, Sungai Duri, Sungai Bakap, Ladang Sempah, Sungai Kechil and Kampung Besar – were transported to the official vote tallying centre at Dewan Serbaguna Jawi, near here.

As of 4pm, 57.7% of the 39,151 voters had cast their ballots to elect a new assemblyman from either Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional.

PH is represented by Joohari Ariffin of PKR, and PN by Abidin Ismail of PAS.

A total of 39,279 people were eligible to vote, including 57 police officers. No early polling was held with the Election Commission receiving 128 postal ballots.

The seat fell vacant following the death of PAS assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24 from stomach inflammation.

In the Penang state elections in August last year, Zamri, who was also the Nibong Tebal PAS division chief, defeated PH candidate Nurhidayah Che Rose with a majority of 1,563 votes.
