KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Olympics team will shine in Rizman Ruzaini’s attire at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics on July 26, according to chef de mission Hamidin Amin.

He said the kit to be worn at the opening ceremony will be unveiled to the public soon.

The Rizman Ruzaini brand – the work of Rizman Nordin and Ruzaini Jamil – recently designed outfits for Lady Gaga for her performance in Las Vegas.

Speaking at Wisma OCM today, Hamidin added that Skechers would be the official footwear for the team at the games, having signed a sponsorship deal worth almost RM200,000.

The Paris Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26 to Aug 11.

Hamidin also believes the Malaysia Athletics Federation’s decision to choose sprint champion Azeem Fahmi over women’s 400m runner Shereen Samson Vallabouy for the sole athletics wild card slot to Paris was the right decision.

He hopes that Azeem, the national record holder for the men’s 100m with a time of 10.09s, will go even faster in Paris, although his chances of challenging for a medal are slim.

On the national team’s preparations, with more than half of the 26 athletes making their first appearance, Hamidin said everything was going smoothly.

“I see everyone is in good condition and injury-free, only women’s badminton doubles player Pearly Tan has just recovered from influenza. I hope they stay focussed until Paris.

“Athletes like Aniq Kasdan, Bertrand Rhodict Lises and Ariana Nur Dania Zairi are confident in their ability to win medals.

“We hope to get as many medals as possible, even though it is a small team,” he said.

Hamidin said the National Sports Institute would further enhance athlete safety procedures, following the sudden death of Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhijie after collapsing on the court during the Asian Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on Sunday.
