PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a civil servant for allegedly abusing her power in securing two procurement contracts worth approximately RM40,000.

According to Berita Harian, these contracts involved the rental of photocopiers and the installation of sinks and piping.

The suspect, a woman in her 50s working at a school in Sabah, was apprehended at 11am today after giving her statement at the Tawau MACC office.

She will be brought to the Tawau sessions court tomorrow morning to face charges.

Berita Harian quoted a source as saying the suspect allegedly exploited her role as an administrative assistant in 2020 to solicit bribes.

“The suspect allegedly called in a company for photocopier and copier printer rental services worth approximately RM20,000, but actually carried out the work herself.

“The suspect is also alleged to have used her position in the same year to select a company linked to her husband for the installation of sinks, piping, and other services, worth approximately RM20,000,” the source was quoted as saying.

Sabah MACC director S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest when contacted, and said the case is being investigated under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009 for abuse of power.

The section provides for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
