Lowering the bar to allow more sports events at Sukma

A sports event is allowed at Sukma only if a minimum of six states take part. Hannah Yeoh, the youth and sports minister, says the rule will be reviewed.

PETALING JAYA:
Rules of the Malaysia Games (Sukma) are to be relaxed to allow sports events to be contested even if they do not attract the minimum of six states as currently required.

Relaxing the rule would provide more athletes with the opportunity to gain competitive experience, said youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh.

“We want to create more athletes by looking at grassroots programmes and reviewing the Sukma structure,” Bernama quoted her as saying.

The six-states rule “is not conducive to the development of that sport,” she said.

A review of Sukma requirements would be conducted by officials of her ministry and the National Sports Council (MSN).

“I will look at the Sukma structure comprehensively. The reform and review of this issue will be overseen by MSN board member S Suriaghandi,” she told reporters at a sports event for the elderly here today.

Sukma 2024 will be held in Sarawak from August 17-24.
