PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested four men on suspicion of receiving bribes from illegal businesses operating across Kuala Lumpur.

According to a source, three of the suspects are still serving at a local authority – one as a deputy director and two as enforcement officers – while the fourth is a former enforcement officer. They are aged 30 to 40.

The source said the main suspect is the deputy director, who is believed to have received monthly bribes ranging from RM100,000 to RM500,000 from illegal massage parlours and entertainment outlets, as well as from businesses that do not possess valid licences.

“The bribes were given (to the suspects) to ensure the illegal businesses were allowed to operate without any enforcement action taken against them.

“Following the arrest of the main suspect, MACC detained three other individuals, who are also believed to have received bribes and acted as intermediaries in distributing the money to other enforcement officers,” the source said.

Additionally, the source said, MACC seized more than RM200,000 in cash, along with jewellery and 28 gold wafers, the value of which has yet to be determined.

According to the source, the suspects were detained at various locations around the city yesterday.

The three suspects who are still with the local authority have been remanded until June 14, while the fourth suspect has been remanded until June 12.

The remand orders were issued by Kuala Lumpur magistrate Shairil Farhana Ruslan following a request by MACC.

Kuala Lumpur MACC director Fauzi Husin said the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) and Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.
