PETALING JAYA:
A DAP assemblyman in Johor has postponed a citizenship briefing and information session after misunderstanding on social media about a poster promoting the June 30 event.

Stulang assemblyman Chen Kah Eng said the briefing in Johor Bahru was about the problems of people lacking citizenship documents or birth certificates due to reasons such as parental negligence.

He cited an example of how a child born to a Malaysian father and Indonesian mother may not have a birth certificate as the parents’ marriage was not registered in Malaysia.

“As a result, the child cannot attend school, will find it difficult to find stable employment with a fair wage, is ineligible to own a vehicle or a driving license, and may be involved in crimes and other social ills,” said Chen in a Facebook post.

“During the briefing, a list of required documents for each case will be provided, with explanation about which department to refer to and visit.

“We hope there will be no speculation following the misunderstanding stemming from our poster.”

Earlier today, the national registration department (JPN) said it was not involved in a citizenship briefing session that was highlighted by social media user @RMalanjum_ .

He said the Stulang DAP Facebook page had no postings about any citizenship programme, but he questioned the citizenship sessions of the Penang DAP.

In a posting with the title “Easy Ways to Apply for Malaysian Citizenship”, he had questioned whether “DAP had taken over JPN’s role” by assisting people to obtain citizenship.

In response, JPN said citizenship applications can only be submitted to the department by applicants in person.

The social media complaint also accused Penang DAP citizenship programme director Yeap Choon Keong of using “illegal means” to help 14 people obtain citizenship between March and May.
