Wangsa Maju police chief Lazim Ismail said the 24-year-old complainant filed a report on May 17 accusing the man of outraging her modesty through the video call.
She got to know the suspect earlier this month through Instagram and had also met him in person before the incident.
“The suspect had made a video call to the complainant and exposed his private parts and spoke in an obscene manner to the complainant.
“She then lodged a police report for further action.
“Police arrested the suspect for further investigation at 2.25pm yesterday, ” Lazim said in a statement, adding that the suspect had been released on police bail.
The case is being investigated for sexual harassment and insulting behaviour under Section 509 of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.
Section 509 of the Penal Code provides for a prison sentence of up to five years or a fine, or both, if convicted, while Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act allows for a maximum RM100 fine.
Lazim said police will complete their investigation paper before referring it to the prosecutors for further action.
“We advise the public to be careful when using social media and not to be easily deceived by individuals they may have just met,” he said.
