At a press conference here, S Dayalan said a doctor at the hospital told the 11-year-old boy’s parents that he would be unable to return to school due to a “nerve condition” resulting from the heatstroke he suffered.
“The parents have filled up a form provided by the hospital for their son to be recognised as an OKU, and tomorrow they have an appointment with the doctor,” he said.
“They will then bring the letter to the social welfare department to obtain the OKU card.”
Dayalan also expressed disappointment with the school’s headmaster for issuing three warning letters to the student for being absent from school while receiving medical treatment.
The parents, AD Mogahana Selvi, 34, and B Suresh, 40, as well as their lawyer, Dinesh Muthal, were also present at the press conference.
“It’s painful for me not to see him in his previous playful and cheerful state,” said Mogahana, who is three months’ pregnant.
“These days, he isolates himself from the rest of the family and is always mumbling to himself.”
FMT previously reported that the boy was ordered to stand under the sun in the middle of the school field from 10am to about 12.50pm on April 30.
Mogahana had said her son’s eyes were red when he came home, and that he told her he did not feel well. She said that she rushed him to a hospital where he fainted at the emergency department.
Mogahana claimed her son told her he was punished after complaining to the teacher that a classmate had thrown a water bottle at him.
Last Saturday, Ampang Jaya police chief Azam Ismail said the cops had wrapped up their probe into the incident in which the boy was punished along with three others by their teacher.
Azam, who said the probe found that the boy had experienced heat exhaustion, added that the investigation paper had been referred to the public prosecutor’s office for further action.
Dayalan, who said he had filed a complaint on the speed of the investigation to the Bukit Aman integrity and standards compliance department, claimed he was told by the investigating officer that the teacher who punished the boy was not arrested as he is a public servant.
Dinesh meanwhile said the family plans to sue the school over the ordeal that the child experienced.
“In other cases, charges can be filed in just a week. This case is straightforward, but it has already been a month,” said Dinesh.
“What are the authorities doing?”
