PETALING JAYA:
The Gig Workers Commission bill will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in July, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the government decided to proceed with the tabling of the bill based on a proposal from youths in the gig economy sector.

“They want the Gig Workers Commission as more than 100,000 of them are working in the gig economy sector.

“The government has formulated (the policy) and we now have the legislation. Hopefully, it will be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat in July,” Bernama quoted him as saying at the opening of the national-level National Youth Day 2024 celebration at Dataran Pahlawan in Banda Hilir, Melaka, today.

Anwar announced the establishment of the commission at the closing of the Bumiputera Economic Congress in Putrajaya last March.

He said it was needed to protect the rights of 1.12 million gig workers with a focus on meeting social needs, resolving contract disputes and promoting the career advancement of the group concerned.

On May 1, Anwar called for work on the setting up of the commission to be expedited.
