PETALING JAYA:
An increase in enrolment at a religious school in Jasin, Melaka, resulted in students in one class having to sit on the floor because there were not enough tables and chairs, says a state executive councillor.

Education, higher education and religious affairs committee chairman Rahmad Mariman said the other 21 classes at the school were fully furnished with tables and chairs.

Rahmad said the Melaka Islamic religious affairs department (Jaim), which is tasked with managing religious schools in the state, ensures that students have a comfortable and conducive learning environment.

“The students who had to sit on the floor were those placed in a new additional class.

“This issue will be resolved soon,” the Molek assemblymar told FMT.

He was responding to a TikTok video by Merlimau assemblyman Dr Akmal Saleh, who slammed Jaim over its alleged delay in procuring tables and chairs for a religious school in his constituency.

In the video, Umno Youth chief Akmal said he had received complaints from students’ parents that their children had to sit on the floor during lessons.

He was also seen questioning a Jaim officer about the lack of tables and chairs, which he said was despite an allocation provided to the school last December.
