The false statement also said Malaysia should emulate Singapore, which has shown rapid progress by no longer overly focussing on the interests of a particular race.
The statement, which used Umno’s official letterhead and is dated today, was allegedly issued by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“Be careful, everyone. A false statement is going viral. Umno headquarters denies that the president issued this statement,” said Umno in a Facebook page.
The party celebrated its 78th anniversary at its headquarters at Menara Dato Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
In his speech, Zahid said Umno leaders must create positive narratives to win over the public and must also master the use of social media to counter slander hurled at the party.
He said the approach was important to ensure the party’s survival and relevance.
“In this era, perception rules over reality … Umno must adapt to the (current) political environment,” he said.
