Chegubard claims trial to defamation, sedition charges

Bersatu activist Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, claimed trial to two charges of criminal defamation and sedition involving the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the cybercrime sessions court here today.

Badrul, 45, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read before judge Siti Aminah Ghazali.

Badrul was accused of making defamatory statements at Istana Negara at 6pm on Jan 22, which could damage the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s reputation.

The offence under Section 500 of the Penal Code carries a maximum two years’ imprisonment, or fine, or both, if convicted.

He was also accused of publishing seditious statements against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on his Facebook page in Taman Bukit Cheras at 12.15pm on April 6.

The charge under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948 carries a maximum RM5,000 fine or imprisonment of up to three years, or both, if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Syed Faisal Syed Amir Bail prosecuted while Badrul was represented by Rafique Rashid Ali.

Judge Siti Aminah set bail at RM10,000 in one surety for each charge and scheduled May 27 for case re-mention.

Yesterday, Rafique said Bukit Aman had informed him that Badrul would be charged with criminal defamation for “using the name of the king”.
