PETALING JAYA:
A government MP has called on health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad to reject a proposal for a ban on 24-hour operating licences for eateries.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said the suggestion, currently under the health ministry’s review, was unnecessary and could have detrimental effects on the country’s economy.

“These 24-hour eateries play a vital role in Malaysia’s economy by providing employment opportunities and generating revenue through food sales and tourism,” he said in a statement.

“Prohibiting them would lead to job losses and a decrease in economic activity.”

He also said these eateries offer convenience and accessibility to people with diverse schedules, including late-shift workers and travellers arriving at unconventional hours.

Earlier today, FMT reported that the health ministry had acknowledged a call by a consumer association for the abolition of 24-hour eateries as a measure to combat obesity in Malaysia, but said the suggestion requires further refinement.

Dzulkefly said engaging stakeholders was essential to understanding the issue and devising effective solutions, and that the needs of frontline workers and others who depend on such eateries should be taken into consideration.

The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) said on Monday that cancelling the 24-hour operating licences of eateries would help mitigate the adverse effects of late-night meals.

CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader said reducing the consumption of late-night meals would be healthier for Malaysians, who are the most obese adults in Southeast Asia, according to Malaysiakini.

Lim said banning 24-hour eateries might also hinder social interactions and recreational activities, thus negatively affecting community cohesion and mental well-being.

“Late-night eateries serve as important social venues where friends and family can gather after work or during weekends to enjoy meals and bond,” he said.
