Helicopter crash victims to be accorded military honours

A ceremony will be held at the 23rd Royal Malay Regiment camp before the bodies are handed over to the families.

The 10 people who died in the collision between two Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) helicopters at the naval base in Lumut yesterday will be accorded military honours at the 23rd Royal Malay Regiment camp here once the post-mortem process is completed.

It is understood that the bodies will then be handed over to the families for burial.

The 10 crew members killed in the crash include 502 Sqn commanding officer (CO) Cdr Amir Mohamad, Lt T Sivasutan and W/O II Shahrizan Termizi.

Those killed from 503 Sqn included CO Cdr Firdaus Ramli, Lt Cdr Wan Rezaudeen Kamal Zainal Abidin, Lt Cdr Amirulfaris Marzukhi and W/O II Faisol Tamadun.

Able Seaman I Joanna Felicia Rohna from the base was also killed, along with W/O II Norfarahimi Saedy and P/O Nor Rahiza Anuar from the West Armada Supply Depot.

Their bodies were taken to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital’s forensic department here yesterday for post-mortem, which is expected to be completed by 3pm today.

In the 9.32am incident, the two navy helicopters crashed while conducting a third rehearsal for a fly-past as part of the RMN’s 90th anniversary event, scheduled to be held this Saturday.
