
He said as of March 21, the number of PKR members in Kelantan increased by 2,027, bringing the total in the state to 60,356.
He said only Selangor PKR was higher with 5,707 new members, for a total of 338,616 members, during the same period.
According to Saifuddin, the total number of party members as of March 21 stood at 1,153,212, up from 1,136,583 last June.
“I still recall exchanging letters with (PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim back then (when he was in prison in 1999) and thinking it would be unimaginable for the party to reach over one million (members).
“Our duty is to maintain and expand this number. In elections, it is all about the numbers,” he said at PKR’s 25th anniversary special convention here today.
On the membership number in other states, he said Sabah was second highest overall with a total membership of 185,004, followed by Sarawak (86,315), Perak (83,688), Kedah (68,726), Penang (66,700), Johor (65,160), Negeri Sembilan (53,795), Federal Territories (42,012), Pahang (35,746), Melaka (30,905), Terengganu (20,163) and Perlis (10,256).
PKR’s membership has always been open to all races since the party was formed in April 1999.
Previously, with PAS as its ally, PKR was able to win some parliamentary and state seats in Kelantan in the four general elections held between 1999 and 2013.
However, since the 14th general election in May 2018, the party has failed to win any seats in the state.
